Paris, May 30. The Spanish Rebeka Masarova fell in the first round of Roland Garros, but put the American Coco Gauff, sixth favorite and finalist of the last edition, against the ropes, before leaning 3-6, 6-1 and 6-2, in 1 hour and 46 minutes.
The 23-year-old Spaniard surprised the 19-year-old prodigy, who, after giving up her serve to the first, was unable to recover it, despite having many balls for it, throughout the initial set.
With the scare in her body, Gauff raised the level and Masarova, 68 in the ranking, could not match that whirlwind of play, which ended up passing over her.
Thus ends Masarova’s first participation in Roland Garros, the third in a Grand Slam, in a year in which she has played the finals in Auckland and Oeiras.
Gauff, who two years ago was a quarter-finalist, will face the winner of the duel between the Austrian Julia Grabher and the Dutch Arantxa Rus, coming from the previous phase.
