In a new attack against the press, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his dissatisfaction with the journalist Carmen Aristegui, who was awarded the 2023 World Hero of Press Freedom award, granted by the International Press Institute (IPI) and the International Media Support (IMS).

During the special ceremony in Vienna, Austria, Aristegui denounced the “artious and direct” attacks on communicators in Mexico by “politicians of the highest level”, starting with President López Obrador, whom he accused of throwing “poison darts”. from his morning conferences to anyone who thinks differently.

And if there are no consequences, as there are not, and if there is impunity, as there is, it is an invitation to continue killing. It is allowing eyes, ears, voices that will no longer be there to inform us to continue to be turned off, ”he lamented.
Aristegui also took the opportunity to denounce censorship and espionage against the media and journalists, and even recalled that both she and her family were monitored through the Pegasus software.

Regarding the journalist’s speech, López Obrador accused that her complaints occur because she wanted to “maintain her privileges” and, like other communicators, continue to “manipulate” the opinion of Mexicans.

In this sense, the Tabasco president justified his statements from the National Palace by stating that journalists who criticize his political project defend “an anti-popular project”, which promotes inequality, corruption and, in addition, reproduces racist and classist discourses.

Without stopping his “darts” against the press, the head of the Federal Executive predicted that, due to the elections on June 4, where the governorships of Coahuila and the State of Mexico will be renewed, the “joy” of his opponents for “the campaign” that they will undertake against his government.
