Even after the 34th and final Eredivisie round, it is still unclear whether Ajax will continue with interim coach John Heitinga. The former defender thinks that more will become clear in the coming days.
Heitinga and Ajax closed the season on Sunday with a 3-1 loss at FC Twente. The team from Amsterdam finished third in the Eredivisie behind Feyenoord and PSV and will play Europa League football next season.
“I think there will be clarity next week,” said Heitinga when he was asked about his future at Ajax for the umpteenth time this season in front of the ESPN camera.
The multiple Orange-international assured that he still knows nothing. “If I could have shared information, I would have. It is best for everyone if we can move on.”
‘I was not thrown under the bus’
At his press conference, Heitinga also said that he was self-critical about Ajax’s game under his leadership. He was put forward at the end of January as successor to the dismissed Alfred Schreuder.
“I will also evaluate myself and look back on the past four months,” he said. “Whether I was thrown in front of the bus by Edwin van der Sar with my appointment? No, I got in to help.”
Heitinga is disappointed that Ajax ended the disaster season in style. “The reality is the Europa League and that is painful. Especially after the success of recent years. We have been quite spoiled.”
