Kirchnerism positions Pedro’s “Wado” as the candidate to face the national elections
On May 16, a few minutes after Cristina Kirchner published a long letter to reaffirm that she would not be a candidate, the electoral actions of Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro rose exponentially. Until then it was a plan C, after a possible candidacy of the Vice President and, secondly, of Sergio Massa.
But that day the Kirchnerist leadership perceived rather quickly that the road was becoming narrower without the potential presence of CFK on the ticket. With Axel Kicillof resisting in La Plata the pressure to jump to the national field and Sergio Massa focused on seeing how to reduce uncontrolled inflation, the name of the man from Mercedino began to gain volume.
After that day there were three significant political events that raised the figure of De Pedro. Cristina Kirchner spoke in a television interview about the need for the children of the decimated generation -of which she considers herself a part- to take over. The target, without a name and surname, was “Wado”.

Then Máximo Kirchner and Martín Insaurralde set up a meeting for the Minister of the Interior with the most influential mayors of the Buenos Aires suburbs. A political gesture that gave him centrality as a candidate and political support from the leaders who attract the most votes throughout the country.
Finally, the Vice President located him behind her in the act of last Thursday in the Plaza de Mayo. Together with Sergio Massa, Axel Kicillof and Máximo Kirchner they formed the most prominent quartet on stage. In an electoral key, all the leaders understood that CFK placed them in that place to anticipate that they will be the protagonists of the next elections. Then, it will be seen where each one is.
To these three events of political impact, was added the spot that De Pedro’s communication team launched a few hours after Cristina Kirchner spoke at the event on May 25. In the video the voice of Néstor Kirchner appears saying that he is part of the decimated generation and of the former president assuring that it is time for the children of that generation to take over.
Last Thursday the Minister of the Interior uploaded a spot in the tone of a campaign
The response to that request comes with a voice-over and images by De Pedro: “La posta de la trabajo y del salario dignified. The post of production. The post of culture and art. The post of the Argentine industry. This is the post that a new generation is going to take. The post of Argentine pride. A generation with the responsibility of building an Argentina that works. This is just starting”.
Then photos of the first posters pasted on the night of the holiday began to circulate on social networks. A photo of De Pedro with CFK and a very clear caption: “Wado is coming”. The Buenos Aires mayors and legislators who were in the Plaza de Mayo quickly decoded the message. They bought into the idea that sooner rather than later the Minister of the Interior will jump in and compete to reach the Casa Rosada.
In the K world they see De Pedro as a candidate to face a STEP. They know that, beyond the will that exists in the arteries of the political space, it will be difficult to impose him as a unity candidate. Installing it, transferring votes from the Vice President to it, and winning the primary election is a more logical path. Above all because in this way they would clear up the doubts of where the leadership of Peronism will be concentrated in the coming years.

The possible launch of De Pedro would write two important definitions with indelible ink. The first is that Axel Kicillof will be empowered, after resisting camporista pressure, to seek re-election in the province of Buenos Aires. The second is that Sergio Massa will not be a candidate for president. If the chosen one is “Wado”, there is no room for another candidate who has the support of the entire Kirchnerist structure.
What’s more, in the camporismo they emphasize that if De Pedro is the candidate, he will have the support of a power bloc that has the governors, the mayors of the suburbs, La Cámpora, the unions, the social organizations and the Renewal Front. In other words, it will be sustained by a closed pact between CFK and Massa.
These speculations have been made permanently, for a few hours, in the ranks of the ruling party. It is clear that the end can be the one anticipated by the street posters or a different one, but with proper names that do not come out of the trident that make up De Pedro, Massa and Kicillof. There seems to be not much room for surprises and hidden candidates. Above all because of the situation of absolute weakness in which Peronism is.
The Minister of the Interior already has the explicit support of the governor of La Rioja, Ricardo Quintela; the mayors of the suburbs who answer to Martín Insaurralde; La Cámpora and the Workers’ CTA led by Hugo Yasky. The most important thing is that, like Kicillof, they do not play hard in the electoral scene if they do not have the endorsement of Cristina Kirchner. That endorsement is given.

In parallel, the sector that is far from the hard core of Kirchnerism resists the pressure and keeps the flag of PASO up. After the act of the Vice President, Daniel Scioli assured that there is no way to lower his candidacy. Either he shows up in the STEP or he shows up with his own list outside the space, but he shows up. It is a position to show that he is willing to maintain his candidacy and compete.
To this line of action will be added the Chief of Staff, Agustín Rossi, who at the beginning of the week will launch his presidential candidacy to increase the number of Peronist options in the primary elections. The problem that both leaders have is that they are left alone supporting the idea that the Frente de Todos defines the candidacies for the PASO. Alberto Fernández’s word has lost a lot of weight and is no longer an endorsement.
Peronism is entering the definition stage. You need to order the electoral scheme more quickly because discount time has begun for the closing of the lists. De Pedro appears on the horizon as the candidate that Kirchnerism does not have to explain, after the candidacies of Daniel Scioli and Alberto Fernández, resisted in the K heart and accepted for electoral convenience.
“Her candidacy was an organic decision of La Cámpora that accelerated and reinforced after Cristina’s resignation. The entire group behind him”, explained a national official close to De Pedro. The formal launch is still missing, but “Wado” is getting closer every day to becoming Kirchner’s presidential candidate. He already tried on the suit and it fits him well.
