Thousands of protesters gathered this Saturday in the center of Hagueto block the movement of one of its main highways, the A12.
The action was organized by Extinction Rebellionan environmental protest movement founded in United Kingdom in 2018 and very active in the Netherlands.
Right after the start of the protest, the police began using water cannons and trying to dislodge them from the road, but were unable to disperse the protesters.
Activists denounce that the Dutch government spends five times more on financial incentives for the fossil fuel sector than the entire national budget allocated to combating climate change.
Our special envoy Vincenzo Genovese offers us more details:
They ask their government to remove subsidies and allocate extra income from fossil fuel industries to a fair climate policy, but also to create a National Citizen Assembly on Climate and Environmentwith the aim of making the country climate neutral by 2025.
So far, the water cannons have not stopped them. Your goal is to keep this road blocked indefinitely.
