FC Barcelona also lost its second game on Tuesday since winning the national title. The team of coach Xavi was no shadow of the team from earlier this season and blamed itself on low flyer Valladolid: 3-1.
After securing the championship on Saturday, FC Barcelona already suffered its first home defeat of the season (1-2 against Real Sociedad) and there were also few positive notes to be discovered against Valladolid. Barça got away well with a 3-1 defeat at the number seventeen of La Liga.
Within 22 minutes, FC Barcelona was already 2-0 behind. Andreas Christensen clumsily passed his own goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen within two minutes with a header and twenty minutes later the FC Barcelona goalkeeper had no answer to a penalty from Cyle Larin.
Even after the break, FC Barcelona seemed to put little energy into the match, so that Valladolid simply held on and could even run further. The damage to Barça, which was praised earlier this season for its strong defense, was limited to three goals by a goal from Gonzalo Plata.
The only positive note for FC Barcelona came in the 84th minute. Top scorer Robert Lewandowski headed in his 23rd league goal of the season on a pass from Frenkie de Jong. It was De Jong’s fourth assist this season.
The season doesn’t seem to be over soon enough for FC Barcelona. Valladolid captured just three important points with the win and climbs to the safe seventeenth place. Two more rounds are scheduled after this.
