FC Barcelona fell as national champion in the first game on Saturday. The Catalan club lost 1-2 to Real Sociedad in front of their own audience.
It was at the game in Camp Nou that the interests at FC Barcelona were no longer great. The club was crowned national champion six days ago and after a few days full of festivities, this was the first match for a home crowd.
After a guard of honor from the Real Sociedad players, it was the visiting club that called the shots. The number four in the ranking took the lead within five minutes: Mikel Merino benefited from the fumbling of FC Barcelona defender Jules Koundé.
The opening goal also did not lead to more offensive drive at FC Barcelona, which only conceded two league goals in Camp Nou before the duel with Sociedad. To the dissatisfaction of the Barça fans, that number was adjusted to four by a hit by former FC Groningen striker Alexander Sørloth.
Despite the mediocre game, hands were still joined in Barcelona in the final phase. Basic customer Frenkie de Jong saw Robert Lewandowski nod in a cross from Ferran Torres in the ninetieth minute. It meant his 22nd league goal for the top scorer.
After Lewandowski’s goal, FC Barcelona saw a chance to prevent the first home defeat of the La Liga season, but the equalizer did not fall. Nevertheless, captain Sergio Busquets received the cup a few minutes later with a big smile.
