The district of Chancay became the scene of a strange event on Tuesday the 16th that has attracted national attention and has aroused doubt in the population to find out why cars, houses and people almost ended up being swallowed by the ground.

The event occurred just a few meters from kilometer 80 of the busy Panamericana Norte highway, in the town of Peralvillo, located in the Lima province of Huaral.
Through social networks, numerous users wondered about the causes of the unusual collapse that made the residents of this area fear the worst. “It seemed like the end of the world,” said one of the people affected.
Representatives of the District Municipality of Chancay arrived at the place to see the size of the damage.
At first, some Internet users thought that it was a natural phenomenon related to the behavior of the soil; however, the authorities and residents of Chancay clarified that this was in response to the excavations carried out to create a port tunnel.

This was confirmed in a statement by Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Peru SA, the company in charge of the works for the realization of this megaport.
The company specified that around 09:00 a.m. there was a “subsidence incident in the construction process of the port tunnel, at kilometer 80 of the North Pan-American highway.”
The event caused three houses to have considerable damage, and two to be declared uninhabitable. Families are scared.
In addition, Cosco Shipping deeply regretted the inconvenience caused as a result of the incident and announced that they will assume responsibility for the necessary actions to repair the damage caused.

The company also indicated that they communicated with the National Port Authority and community leaders. It turned out that the investigation to determine the causes would have already begun.
The headquarters of the company in charge of the works was taken over on Tuesday the 16th by a group of Protestant neighbors due to the collapse in their area.
The Panorama Huaral portal broadcast images of the residents of the Peralvillo town center at the concessionaire’s facilities, where they threw stones.

In dialogue with that medium, a neighbor denounced that they have been enduring the noise of “dynamite” used to perforate the ground for eight months.
The unrest has reached its peak, with altercations between neighbors and police officers, after Emapa Chancay, which supplies drinking water in this jurisdiction, announced the temporary suspension of the service to prevent leaks. The closure of the road has also been registered, at kilometer 75 and 80.
In a statement for Canal N, Rómulo Zarauz, a company director, indicated: “We have communicated with three of the four family members directly affected. I have had direct contact with three and with one of them it has been done through a community relations officer. We have offered to transfer them to the hotel, rebuild their house and carry out investigations”
Likewise, he considered the arrival of residents at the concessionaire’s facilities an “act of annoyance” and added that he remains “in communication with the leaders to reach a satisfactory situation.”

He also announced that until they have a conclusive answer from the experts about what has happened in the tunnel, they will not be able to continue with the construction of that part of the megaport.
The excavations carried out to create a port tunnel would have caused the tracks, sidewalks and houses to sink. To Canal N, one of those affected mentioned that two months ago he requested a contingency plan from the construction company, but that it mentioned that a sinking scenario “was not going to happen.”
