Manchester City took another step towards the championship in the Premier League on Sunday. Thanks in part to a goal by Erling Haaland, the team of manager Josep Guardiola was 0-3 too strong for Everton, which is in relegation trouble.
The first two goals came at the end of the first half. Ilkay Gundogan put City 0-1 before Haaland doubled the score. The top striker scored his 36th goal of the season, further breaking the record for most Premier League goals in a single season.
In the second half, Gündogan further extended the score at Goodison Park. The central midfielder was also accurate twice in the previous league match against Leeds United (2-1 win).
It was City’s eleventh league win in a row. The top club from Manchester took over the lead from Arsenal on April 26 by putting the competitor aside 4-1 in a direct duel.
City’s lead over Arsenal is four points. Both clubs have played 35 games, although Arsenal will play at home against Brighton & Hove Albion later on Sunday (kick-off: 5.30 p.m.). For City, the third title in a row and the seventh in twelve years shines.
West Ham United could not give a suitable follow-up to the midweek 2-1 victory over AZ in the Conference League. Manager David Moyes’ side lost 2–0 at Brentford. Next Thursday, the return against AZ will follow in Alkmaar in the semifinals.
