Theologians closely follow these developments which seem to offer man new possibilities of leading creation towards its fulfilment. Among many other questions, they wonder about the status and place in the history of salvation of these increasingly “intelligent” “machines” whose cognitive capacities now exceed those of man. With an increasingly blurred human-machine boundary, will we not come tomorrow to recognize these “thinking machines” as a “personality” with corresponding rights?

Current scientific developments make it necessary to repeat what makes the human specific. It is therefore necessary to explore afresh what it means to be created in the image and likeness of God, integrating the fact that we are already transformed, conditioned by the technical environment in which we live. Artificial intelligence already occupies a large place in our daily lives. It already marks our personal and collective histories. It is therefore not neutral from the point of view of our own redemption and of the history of salvation in general. Hence the urgency of a new intelligence of faith in the age of artificial intelligence.
