3.0 earthquake with epicenter in Magdalena Contreras alerted residents of CDMX

At 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, a micro-earthquake surprised the inhabitants of Mexico City, since the seismic alerts did not give notice of the magnitude 3.0 movement that originated in the Magdalena Contreras mayor’s office.

According to the reports of the National Seismological Service, the epicenter of the movement was 3 kilometers to the northeast of said demarcation and emerged at a depth of one kilometer.

Preliminarily, the head of government of CDMX, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, based on reports from the Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, ruled out any affectation in the capital.

“@SGIRPC_CDMX informs me that everything is calm after the earthquake perceived in some city halls in the City,” the official wrote on her social networks minutes after the tremor.

According to authorities from the Command, Control, Computing, Communications and Citizen Contact Center (C5) of Mexico City, seismic alerts are not activated when the epicenter is located within the capital.

The non-governmental project Seismo Alerta Mexicana, through its social networks, explained that this is due to limitations in the warning time and the speed of propagation of seismic waves.

“The time it takes for seismic waves to travel from the epicenter to nearby areas is so short that it does not allow the seismic warning system to detect and transmit the warning signal in time,” they explained.

For his part, Martí Batres, head of the CDMX Government Secretariat, explained in an interview with Milenio that the alarms are activated “when we have a tremor of [magnitud] 5.5 up, which was not the case”.

In addition, he ratified that when the earthquakes originate in Mexico City itself, there is no notification by the alerts, since these fulfill the function of warning when an earthquake is going to reach the capital.
