Journalist, presenter and writer Wim Kayzer has passed away at the age of 76. This is reported by broadcaster VPRO today.
Kayzer, who was also known for his characteristic eye patch, started working for the VPRO in 1983, for which he made various programs with an intellectual character.
When the VPRO celebrated its 95th anniversary in 2021, Kayzer was included in the broadcaster’s canon. For its composition, viewers and listeners were asked what gave them the ultimate VPRO feeling.
A well-known Kayzer program included the four-part Nauwzet en desperation from 1989, in which the twentieth century was interpreted through conversations with writers Gabriel García Márquez and György Konrád, cultural philosopher George Steiner, and Jorge Semprún, the then Minister of Culture in Spain.
Vision of science
And in Of the beauty and the comfort (2000) Kayzer spoke with writers, musicians, scientists and philosophers, among others, about their view of life. They were asked the question, “What makes this life worth living?”
Another of Kayzer’s celebrated series was A Brilliant Accident from 1993, in which scientists were given the opportunity to express their views on their work, with the central question being what science has brought them and society.
Writer Ronald Giphart was a big fan of the series, he says on Twitter:
The last thing Kayzer made for VPRO was the documentary Footnotes from the provisional will of the dancer, poet and draftsman in 2002. For this he spoke with choreographer Rudi van Dantzig, poet and writer Willem Wilmink and comics artist Marten Toonder.
