Max Verstappen is delighted with his victory in the Miami Grand Prix. The Red Bull Racing world champion was in a class of his own and drove to victory from ninth on the grid.
“It was a nice race. I stayed out of trouble in the beginning and overtook them one by one. I lasted a long time on the hard tyres. That made the difference today,” said Verstappen in a first reaction.
After his pit stop, he entered the track just behind teammate Sergio Pérez in the closing stages. “That was a great battle. We kept it clean. This is a great win.”
According to Verstappen, there was no panic after Saturday’s failed qualifying. Due to a crash by Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, the Dutchman was unable to improve, resulting in only ninth on the grid.
“That was a setback, but we stayed calm. Winning from ninth on the grid is always a good feeling. We didn’t know what the weather would do today, but we were convinced that our strategy would pay off. And it showed.”
Due to his victory in Miami, Verstappen now has 119 points as World Cup leader. Red Bull teammate Pérez follows with 105 points. The top three is completed by Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso, who has 75 points.
