Mark Flek was unable to claim a place in the German Cup final with SC Freiburg on Tuesday. The reserve keeper of Orange had to allow four goals in the semi-final against RB Leipzig before the break. It became 1-5.
Dani Olmo was the big man at Stade Europa-Park. The Spaniard from Leipzig made it 0-1 and then assisted the 0-2 (Benjamin Henrichs), the 0-3 (Dominik Szoboszlai) and the 0-4 (Christopher Nkunku).
Leipzig had to continue with ten men from the 58th minute due to a red card for Josko Gvardiol, but the backlog was already too big for Freiburg to make it exciting. Michael Gregoritsch saved the honour, after which Szoboszlai made it 1-5 from a penalty in the final seconds.
The game was a repeat of last year’s cup final, when Leipzig was too strong for Freiburg after penalties. The other finalist of the DFB-Pokal comes from the match between VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
Freiburg and Flek perform excellently in competition. The club from the south of Germany is fourth four rounds before the end – one place above Leipzig – and thus occupies a Champions League place.
Four-time Orange international Flek was part of the selection of the new national coach Ronald Koeman during the last international period. He was on the bench against both France and Gibraltar. Jasper Cillessen was first choice.
