Arsenal put the pressure somewhat on title rival Manchester City on Tuesday. Despite a goal from Noni Madueke, ‘The Gunners’ simply won against Chelsea (3-1) and are leaders in the Premier League for at least one day.
Arsenal had no child for much of the game against Chelsea, who suffered their sixth consecutive defeat. After just over half an hour it was already 2-0 thanks to two goals from Martin Ødegaard. The Norwegian playmaker was able to shoot in a cross from Granit Xhaka in both cases.
Before the break, Gabriel Jesus increased the margin from close by and Chelsea seemed to be waiting for a hefty punishment. That was not too bad, because Madueke scored the only goal of the second half. The former PSV player nicely worked in a deep ball from Mateo Kovacic.
It was Madueke’s first goal for Chelsea. The winger was allowed to start against Arsenal for the first time since mid-February and paid off that confidence with a goal. Madueke exchanged PSV for around 35 million euros for Chelsea in the winter.
Madueke’s goal hardly faltered Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s team comes through the 3-1 victory on 78 points, two more than Manchester City. The title rival from Manchester will play against West Ham United on Wednesday and then has one game in credit.
For Chelsea, the title has been out of sight for a long time. ‘The Blues’ are only twelfth, while they were led by three different trainers this season and spent around 600 million euros on new players.
