The series of temporary truces in the past week has eased the fighting in only some areas, but in others the fierce battles have continued to drive civilians from their homes and push the country towards disaster.
The belligerent generals of Sudan have agreed to send representatives to the negotiations, which could take place in Saudi Arabiathe country’s top UN official said on Monday, even as the two sides clashed in the capital despite a new three-day extension of a fragile ceasefire.
“None of the ceasefires have been fully respected. All have been partially respected and sometimes only in some places and not in others,” said the special representative of the UN secretary general for Sudan, Volker Perthes.
In their statements, both parties accuse each other of these violations.
Food and water are becoming increasingly difficult to find in Sudanese cities, and the lack of basic medical care means that many people could die of preventable causes. The UN warned this Sunday that this humanitarian crisis is in “a critical point”.
