A South Korean art student ate a banana from a world-famous work of art. It concerns the work Comedian, which consists of a banana stuck to the wall with a piece of duct tape.

The student picked up the banana last week, ate it and then taped the peel back to the wall. Images of it can be seen on this Instagram page. A spokesperson for the Seoul museum told CNN that the boy was hungry because he hadn’t had breakfast. No further steps will be taken against him.

A new banana is now hanging on the artwork. The piece of fruit is replaced every two or three days anyway.

It’s not the first time Comedian’s banana has been eaten. In December 2019, the artwork was soldiered on at an exhibition in Miami Beach by an American performance artist, just after it was auctioned for $120,000. Images of it went viral.

The creator of the work is the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. He is known for getting publicity more often with striking work. For example, he made a toilet bowl of 18 carat gold, which could even be used for a while when it was in the Guggenheim in New York.

Cattelan also made a sculpture of a kneeling Adolf Hitler, for which 15 million euros was paid at auction.
