Chinese chess player Ding Liren is the new world champion after defeating Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi in the final rapid tiebreaker game of the 2023 FIDE World Championship.
Coming to a 7-7 draw after 14 exciting classical games, it all came down to the final clash that made Ding the first Chinese player to become world chess champion. The reign of the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen falls apart. For the first time since 2013, the torch passes to Ding, the 17th world champion.
In addition to the title, Ding will receive €1.1 million for his win, while Nepomniachtchi will receive €900,000.
