For SC Cambuur, direct relegation from the Eredivisie has become almost inevitable. The formation from Leeuwarden lost 2-0 on Friday at FC Volendam, which did excellent business in the battle for survival.
It was clear in the first half that great interests were at stake. Both FC Volendam and SC Cambuur only sparsely sought the attack, so that great opportunities were not forthcoming.
Just before half-time, the 1-0 fell completely out of nowhere. Damon Mirani headed in from a corner kick taken by Carel Eiting that was unnecessarily given away by Sekou Sylla.
After the break, FC Volendam was more dangerous, but Robert Mühren and Eiting, among others, were stopped by Robbin Ruiter. Daryl van Mieghem saw a goal rejected for offside in between. SC Cambuur could not threaten much and also collected the 2-0 just before the end. Once again Mirani was successful with the head, and again from Eiting’s corner.
The team from Leeuwarden is stuck at sixteen points, nine less than number sixteen FC Emmen. FC Volendam comes to thirty points and is now five points above the line.
SC Cambuur, which is in its second season in a row in the Eredivisie, will play against FC Utrecht (home), Vitesse (away), Sparta Rotterdam (away) and RKC Waalwijk (home) in the remaining rounds. FC Volendam will meet RKC Waalwijk (away), Sparta Rotterdam (home), Go Ahead Eagles (away) and Excelsior (home).
