Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United was eliminated by Sevilla in the quarterfinals of the Europa League on Thursday evening. The Spanish club won at home with no less than 3-0 after last week’s 2-2 at Old Trafford. The Dutch tinted Bayer Leverkusen convincingly knocked the Belgian Union Saint-Gilloise out of the tournament.
At Manchester United, Harry Maguire was in the base due to the serious injury of Lisandro Martínez. The England international of all people made a huge mistake in Seville’s 1-0 by handing in the ball in the build-up, although it was not convenient for goalkeeper David de Gea to play in Maguire.
The defender was surrounded by three Sevilla players. After the error of the Manchester United captain, the ball ended up with Youssef En-Nesyri, who finished convincingly.
The visitors, where Wout Weghorst and Tyrell Malacia started on the bench, showed almost nothing offensively. Just before half-time, Manchester United even escaped a greater deficit, when ex-Ajax player Lucas Ocampos’ 2-0 was rejected for offside.
It turned out to be a postponement of execution, because the second goal of the home team fell just after the resumption. Defender Loïc Badé headed in from a corner kick and presented Manchester United with a tough task.
The English record champion offered almost nothing in return, not even after Weghorst’s entrance after 54 minutes. In the 81st minute, the evening became even more painful for Manchester United. On coming out, De Gea stepped over the ball, a blunder from which En-Nesyri took advantage.
The curtain falls in Europe for the formation of Ten Hag, after it previously eliminated FC Barcelona, among others.
The Dutch are accurate for Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen, which got stuck in a 1-1 draw for its own audience last week, won no less than 1-4 at Union Saint-Gilloise. The visitors opened the score after just two minutes. After the home team was unable to clear the ball, Moussa Diaby struck.
Even before the break, the formation of trainer Xabi Alonso doubled the margin thanks to Mitchel Bakker, who acted as the end station of a nice attack. Via Jeremie Frimpong, who formed the Dutch share in the base of Bayer Leverkusen together with Bakker, it even became 0-3 after sixty minutes. The wingback took advantage of a mistake in the build-up of goalkeeper Anthony Moris.
Casper Terho then took care of the 1-3, but it turned out to be no more than a cloth for the bleeding of the Belgian stunt club. Especially because Adam Hlozek made it 1-4 from a rebound. Bart Nieuwkoop completed the ninety minutes with the home team, where PSV mercenary Yorbe Vertessen was injured in the first half.
