Customs found 656 kilos of cocaine during a check in the port of Vlissingen. The drugs, with a street value of around 50 million euros, were hidden in a shipment of bananas from Ecuador.

The cargo was on its way to a company in Germany. According to the Public Prosecution Service, that company probably has nothing to do with drug smuggling.

The HARC team, a partnership of customs, FIOD, seaport police and the Public Prosecution Service in Rotterdam has launched an investigation. The cocaine was destroyed by Customs’ Special Assistance Team.

Customs regularly intercepts consignments of drugs. At the beginning of this year, for example, more than 4,700 kilos of cocaine from Chile and Ecuador, among others, was intercepted in the port of Rotterdam. Those drugs were also partly hidden between a load of bananas. The amount of drugs found in the port of Rotterdam did decrease last year compared to the previous year. It increased in the port of Antwerp.
