HOUSTON (AP) — Jake Meyers hit a three-run homer in the first inning for Houston, as the Astros scored seven runs to beat Kevin Gausman and the Toronto Blue Jays 9-2 on Monday night.
Meyers and Corey Julks each finished with two hits and three RBIs for Houston, which lost two of three games over the weekend against Texas. Cristian Javier (2-0) pitched innings and a one-run ball.
Cuban José Abreu set the spark for Houston’s great start with a two-run RBI double. After a walk to Kyle Tucker and Jeremy Pena reaching on interference by catcher Danny Jansen, Julks made it 4-0 with another two-run double.
Then Meyers came along and lined out to right with his first home run of the season, going for seven runs in the first.
Gausman (1-2) charged for eight runs, seven earned, with seven hits in 4 2-3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.
For the Blue Jays, the Dominican Santiago Espinal 1-1 with a run scored and an RBI.
For the Astros, Cuban José Abreu, 4-1 with a run scored and two RBIs. Honduran Mauricio Dubón 3-1 with a run scored and produced. The Mexican César Salazar from 1-1. Puerto Rican Martin Maldonado from 3-1
