In Vlissingen, at least two fishmongers were arrested during a major police operation last night. They are suspected of trading in undersized fish, i.e. fish that does not meet the minimum length.
Shortly after midnight, the police raided five fishing vessels moored at the fish market in Vlissingen, the Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant (PZC) reported. All crew members on the fishing cutters were stopped and searched by the police.
150 officers were deployed in the action. The investigation, aimed at the trade in undersized and therefore illegally caught fish, has been going on for three quarters of a year.
The raids followed an investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Department and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. The newspaper writes that two fishmongers were arrested in their home.
The crew members of the ships are not regarded as suspects, but they will be questioned. The investigation into the ships and their cargo is still ongoing.
