AFPEva Kaili, on her way home after her release
NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 16:49
In Brussels, deposed Vice-President of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, has been released from prison. After spending four months in jail, she can serve the rest of her pretrial detention at home with an electronic ankle bracelet.
The Greek Kaili is suspected of corruption, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization together with three other European politicians.
The case in question has been renamed ‘Qatargate’. Qatar and Morocco are suspected of bribing politicians in Brussels to influence decision-making in the European Union in such a way that the two countries benefit. Both countries deny having anything to do with the case.
1.5 million euros in cash
During house searches of the suspects, an amount of 1.5 million euros was found in cash in December last year. The four suspects had to go to jail, of whom Kaili was detained the longest.
One of the suspects has pleaded guilty and is now cooperating with the judiciary. The other three deny the charges.
