Russia is considering lifting the ban it had imposed on Twitter after the social network restored access to the accounts of Russian state bodies. The ban was imposed before Elon Musk took over the management of the company.
On Friday, Twitter again allowed access to accounts to the Kremlinthe Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and other ministries, as well as Russian embassies abroad.
“Regarding the lifting of restrictions on government agencies. Many of them are still in no hurry to reactivate their accounts, especially since Twitter is officially blocked in Russia. But I think it is time to reconsider this measure, given the new policies of the new leadership,” Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma Committee for Information Policy, wrote on his Telegram channel on Monday.
According to the parliamentarian, if the social network now aims at neutrality, it is necessary to resume dialogue with it and continue to work within the framework of Russian legislation. “And for our state agencies Twitter can once again be a convenient platform to explain Russia’s position to a Western audience,” Gorelkin added.
The Safe Internet League supported the initiative to lift the blockade of the social network Twitter on the territory of Russia. This was stated this Monday by Ekaterina Mizulina, director of the organization, in response to a query from TASS.
“I support this proposal. Twitter’s policy regarding the distribution of prohibited content has changed. In addition, censorship of official Russian accounts has been removed. The platform demonstrates new approaches to work after being bought by Elon Musk. I think Russia can start work on reviewing the decision to restrict the platform’s work in Russia,” he wrote.
Mizulina also underlined that it considers Twitter an important resource for working with the Western public. “I plan to open an account there in the near future,” she added.
