NEW YORK (AP) — Catcher Omar Narváez went on the disabled list with a strained left calf that would keep him out of games for the New York Mets for several weeks.
The Mets announced Thursday that Narváez had an MRI, which revealed a moderate to severe strain. The team indicated that the typical recovery timeline is eight to nine weeks.
The Venezuelan’s injury could open a roster vacancy for fellow Venezuelan prospect Francisco Álvarez, who hit two home runs in four games for Triple-A Syracuse. The catcher, known for his good hitting, is one of the biggest prospects in all of baseball.
Álvarez made his major league debut in late September and went 2 for 12 with a home run, a double and a pair of walks in five regular-season games.
He was made to the Mets’ playoff roster and struck out in his only postseason appearance, in the NL wild-card series against San Diego.
Narváez, 31, left the Mets’ 7-6 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. He told the press that he suffered from a muscle “stiffness” problem.
He was replaced by the Puerto Rican Tomás Nido. Narváez was hitting .286 with two RBIs in five games with New York after signing a one-year contract with the team in December.
The Mets also announced that they acquired right-hander Edwin Uceta from Pittsburgh and sent him to Syracuse.
