The death toll from at least 60 tornadoes in the US has risen to at least 26. The deaths occurred on Friday and Saturday in the states of Arkansas, Indiana, Alabama, Illinois, Mississippi and Tennessee. Dozens of people were injured.
In Little Rock, Arkansas, one tornado damaged 2,600 buildings. In Tennessee, 7 people were killed. The residents were killed when they were surprised by a second after sheltering from the first tornado, The Washington Post reports.
The US weather service had warned of thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes. Lightning strikes caused grassland fires in the state of Oklahoma that quickly spread due to the strong winds.
The tornado season is fierce, but not exceptional, according to the US weather service. On April 4, 1974, a super outbreak of 148 tornadoes killed 300 people.
