The number of traffic jams on Dutch roads is higher this year than before corona. The ANWB says this on the basis of the traffic figures for the first quarter of this year. Compared to early 2019, the number of traffic jams increased by 10 percent.
Arnoud Broekhuis of ANWB Traffic Information says there are more cars compared to four years ago. A total of 470,000 cars were added and “that literally and figuratively leaves its mark on the road”.
There are almost 9 million passenger cars in the Netherlands. “Add to that the freight traffic and it is clear that this has consequences for the flow. Especially if we go on the road at the same time.”
File record broken
Tuesday and Thursday remain the busiest days on the road. The Tuesday morning rush hour grew 50 percent; that of Thursday by more than 20 percent. Monday and Friday mornings, on the other hand, were quieter than four years ago. The busiest provinces are still South Holland and North Brabant.
According to the ANWB, this year’s morning rush hour was particularly busy on the A12 between the German border and Arnhem, near Duiven. In the evening it is often traffic jams on the A27 from Utrecht to Breda, near Noordeloos.
In addition, a traffic jam record was also broken this year. On Tuesday morning, March 14, there were 1102 kilometers of traffic jams due to snow and rain.
