Gwyneth Paltrow is not liable for an accident on a US ski slope. A jury rejected the million-dollar claim from retired ophthalmologist Terry Sanderson on Thursday. After an eight-day civil trial, a jury unanimously ruled that Paltrow did not cause the 2016 collision.
The judge will later decide on the legal costs, which Paltrow believes Sanderson should pay. Paltrow’s lawyers said there was evidence that Sanderson had skied against her. In addition, he had several medical complaints, which he claimed he got from the accident, even before the collision.
Sanderson lawyers demanded almost $ 3.3 million (more than 3 million euros) from Paltrow. Later that amount was adjusted to $ 300,000, the maximum amount he could claim from the judge.
Sanderson claimed the 2016 ski slope collision in Utah left him with four broken ribs and permanent psychological damage.
Case attracted a lot of media attention
He started his lawsuit against the Shakespeare in Love actress in 2019. Paltrow in turn filed a counterclaim for a symbolic 1 dollar (92 euro cents), plus reimbursement of legal costs.
The case received a lot of attention in the American media. Both parties painted a completely different picture of how the accident would have played out.
Also, remarkable arguments were made in the testimonies of both Paltrow and Sanderson. For example, the latter claimed that celebrities like Paltrow never take the blame, comparing her to the (now deceased) sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
