ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies placed Bryce Harper on the 10-day disabled list Thursday, avoiding the 60-day list and leaving open the possibility of the star slugger’s return sooner. of the end of May.
Phillies president of basketball operations Dave Dombrowski said the schedule for Harper’s return from elbow reconstruction surgery has not changed. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in November, he said he hopes the two-time NL MVP will return to the lineup as a designated hitter after the All-Star break. If he had gone on the 60-day list he would have been out until at least May 29.
“We remain hopeful. The good thing is that so far everything has been positive as far as rehab,” Dombrowski admitted in the dugout before the season opener at Texas. “It feels good. The doctors who checked him said they felt fine.”
Harper was on the team for the season opener at Texas, the same day first baseman Rhys Hoskins underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL he suffered in spring training.
Manager Rob Thomson said the deal went extremely well.
