In Peru, prosecutors have launched a money laundering investigation into President Dina Boluarte and her predecessor Pedro Castillo. A businessman is also under scrutiny by the judiciary.
The investigation revolves around the financing of the 2021 presidential election campaigns. The businessman has stated that he had paid for part of Castillo’s election campaign. He would also have paid for travel for Boluarte, who was then running for vice president.
Illegal donations
Castillo was impeached in December after attempting to dissolve parliament. He was subsequently arrested and is still in jail.
Current president Boluarte denies that she received illegal campaign donations. She speaks of “political maneuvers” designed to undermine her government. An investigation is also underway into Boluarte’s role in the unrest in the country following Castillo’s arrest.
Peru has been in a political crisis for years. Many presidents and other senior figures have been linked to or convicted of corruption.
