Feyenoord cannot rely on Lutsharel Geertruida in the coming weeks. The defender sustained a hamstring injury in the lost European Championship qualifier of the Netherlands against France (4-0) on Friday.
Geertruida made his debut for the Orange squad in Paris. The defender-cum-defensive midfielder was injured just in time and was replaced by Tyrell Malacia. He therefore missed the match against Gibraltar on Monday (3-0 win).
Geertruida is this season’s basic player at Feyenoord, which is leading the Eredivisie. The Rotterdam club will play against Sparta, Ajax (cup semifinals), RKC, AS Roma (Europa League quarterfinals) and Cambuur in the coming weeks.
Gernot Trauner also returned earlier from his international obligations. The defender suffered from knee problems after a tap in Austria’s match against Azerbaijan (4-1) last Friday. He is a question mark for next Sunday’s away match against Sparta.
Feyenoord cherishes a six-point lead over number two Ajax in the Eredivisie. The team of coach Arne Slot booked an important 2-3 win over the arch-rival just before the international match in Amsterdam. There are still eight rounds to go in the Eredivisie.
