PSV press secretary Thijs Slegers has passed away. He died of leukemia. He turned 46 years old.
As a journalist, Thijs Slegers was a PSV watcher for various media for many years. In 2015 he joined PSV as press officer.
Slegers was struck by acute leukemia in 2020. He underwent a stem cell transplant that initially proved successful and went back to work at PSV. But at the beginning of February, the press officer announced that he had contracted a rejection disease as a result of the operations he underwent.
Since then, Slegers has been successfully recruiting blood and stem cell donors. Many people have recently registered with the Matchis and Sanquin foundations.
In response to Slegers’ illness, the Feyenoord supporters’ association made a statement at the Feyenoord-PSV football match on Sunday 5 February. In the twelfth minute of the game, the supporters called for “as the twelfth man, to put all sentiments aside” and to shine a light together in De Kuip, with the telephone.
