Theo Maassen sent a 3-year-old child and the child’s supervisor, probably the mother, out of the room during a performance in Antwerp.
According to, among others, the Nieuwsblad, a young child could be heard laughing after about ten minutes during Maassen’s performance in the Arenberg theatre.
Maassen went looking for the source of the sound and came across the child. The comedian asked the child’s age. According to the Nieuwsblad, he then made a number of jokes and asked: “How expensive is a babysitter in Belgium? I thought the Dutch were stingy”.

Then he asked the woman and child to leave the room. “Sorry, but I’m not doing my show for a three-year-old,” he allegedly said. The attendant and the child left the room. Maassen promised the two that they would get their money back.
“That was not necessary, she thought,” says Maassen to the AD . “And she said she enjoyed the first ten minutes of the performance.”
The comedian tells AD that a baby was sometimes taken along at one of his performances, but that he had never seen a toddler at his performance. “That with the baby was crazy, but this is even weirder than that. Very bizarre. It also happened with the most dirty joke I made. Then I suddenly heard a young child laughing.”
He continued his show afterwards, revisiting the incident several more times, says a visitor on Twitter:
The theater says it regrets the incident. Maassen thinks that the theater staff should have spoken to the woman before she went inside. “If people are dead drunk or have kids, that’s what they should be doing, yes.”
The comedian is currently on tour with the performance Unknown Terrain. Among other things, he plays sixteen times in Carré.
