Matthijs de Ligt and Bart Verbruggen returned to the selection of the Dutch national team on Saturday. The defender and keeper have recovered from a virus infection and can play against Gibraltar on Monday. Lutsharel Geertruida (injured) and Stefan de Vrij (family expansion) have left the training camp.
De Ligt and Verbruggen are two of the five Orange players who were unable to participate in the European Championship qualifying match with France (4-0 loss) due to a virus outbreak on Friday. Sven Botman, Cody Gakpo and Joey Veerman are not yet fit enough to return to the selection.
Opposite the return of De Ligt and Verbruggen is the loss of Geertruida and De Vrij. Feyenoord defender Geertruida was injured in his debut match against France and will return to Rotterdam. De Vrij is about to become a father and returns home in consultation with national coach Ronald Koeman.
The Orange hopes to take revenge against football dwarf Gibraltar on Monday for the defeat against France in Stade de France, where Koeman’s team was already 3-0 behind after 21 minutes. The match against Gibraltar in group B of the European Championship qualification series starts at 8.45 pm in De Kuip.
