At least 23 people have been killed by a tornado in the US state of Mississippi. Dozens of people were injured. The state’s disaster response agency expects the death toll to rise.
The whirlwind left a trail of destruction over a distance of more than 100 miles. The 1,700-resident town of Rolling Fork, close to the Louisiana border, has been largely destroyed, Mayor Walker said. “My city is gone. But we are resilient and will come back stronger.”

Devastating tornado Mississippi
Four people are still missing in the small town of Silver City in western Mississippi. Rescue teams search for survivors in various places among the rubble.
According to the National Meteorological Service, reports came in of the tornado about 100 kilometers northeast of the capital Jackson. It brought heavy hailstorms, rainfall and wind gusts of more than 110 kilometers per hour. The whirlwind moved toward the state of Alabama. Tornado warnings have been issued in several southern states.
