American actress Gwyneth Paltrow has denied responsibility for a skiing accident in 2016 in court. The man involved is demanding $ 300,000 from her.
Central to the process is the question of who bumped into whom. Retired optometrist Terry Sanderson says it was the 50-year-old actress who hit him on a descent. He suffered broken ribs and says he still suffers from brain damage from the accident.
In her testimony before the judge, Paltrow argued that Sanderson was wrong. She described that at first she didn’t realize what was happening when he hit her and thought for a moment about an assault.
“I was skiing and two skis got in between mine, spreading my legs. Someone pressed against me and I heard a crazy moan, so my brain was trying to understand what was happening. Is this a joke? Is this happening? something perverse? It was very crazy.”
No faith in witnesses
According to Paltrow, there was no loud bang: “It was all slow. There was no bang.” However, they fell to the ground due to the entanglement. The actress says she twisted her knee in the process. She did not see that Sanderson became unconscious, as he said.
Sanderson’s attorney cross-examined her to ask why she hadn’t asked the man how he was. “He had hit me and I was upset,” Paltrow replied in her curt replies. “Someone else asked how it was going and he said he was okay.”
Paltrow also questioned the story of the only witness to the accident, a friend of Sanderson’s. According to Paltrow, he could not have seen who was wrong because of his color blindness. “At 12 meters away you can’t see who’s who with two people in skiwear with helmets.” In addition, according to her, the man’s story was inconsistent.
Goop
The trial continues next week, with medical experts her defense has enlisted, ski instructors and Paltrow’s two children, who were on the ski vacation. Her lawyers argue that Sanderson wants to exploit the Oscar winner’s celebrity for financial gain.
Paltrow made a career in the 90s with films such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, Sliding Doors and Shakespeare in Love. Today, she mainly focuses on her lifestyle brand Goop.
