Sevilla FC appointed José Luis Mendilibar as the new head coach on Tuesday. A few earlier, the relegation candidate said goodbye to coach Jorge Sampaoli.
Sevilla is fourteenth in La Liga and only has two points more than Valencia, which is in a relegation spot. It is up to Mendilibar to ensure survival.
His predecessor Sampaoli started at the Spanish club in October, but was fired on Tuesday due to “disappointing results in combination with the game shown”. Sampaoli was in his second spell at Sevilla. In 2017, he guided the team to fourth place in La Liga.
The club from Andalusia can still make up for the season in the Europa League. In April, Sevilla, which won the tournament three years ago, will face Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in the quarterfinals. Sevilla settled with PSV in the eighth finals.
Mendilibar was a trainer at Deportivo Alavés last season, but was unable to prevent relegation from La Liga at the time. The 62-year-old Spaniard was previously active at Levante, CA Osasuna and Real Valladolid.
