The luxury car manufacturer Ferrari has announced that it was the target of a cyberattack targeting the confidential data of certain customers around the world and that it received a ransom demand.
Ferrari “recently received a ransom demand regarding certain contact details of its customers,” the manufacturer said in a statement Monday evening.
The hackers “had access to certain data relating to our customers such as names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers, but not to bank details”, a Ferrari spokesperson told AFP on Tuesday.
“To our knowledge, nothing has been disclosed on the internet at this time. We are monitoring the situation very closely,” he added.
“As a matter of principle, Ferrari will not agree” to pay a ransom, “because paying such demands would finance criminal activities and allow threat actors to perpetuate their attacks,” the manufacturer points out.
This cyberattack “has had no impact on the operations of our company”, assures Ferrari.
Upon receipt of the ransom demand, “we immediately launched an investigation in cooperation with a leading international cybersecurity company” and “informed the competent authorities”, adds the manufacturer.
CEO Benedetto Vigna sent a letter to customers of the prestigious Prancing Horse brand informing them of the incident.
The manufacturer delivered a total of 13,221 cars worldwide last year, up 18.5%.
