Michael van Gerwen won 7 in the German Hildesheim Players Championship on Sunday. De Brabander defeated Josh Rock 8-4 in the final, after he had taken revenge on Dirk van Duijvenbode (6-4) in the quarterfinals.
The 33-year-old Van Gerwen led 3-1 in the final against Rock twelve years his junior and then ran out to 5-2. The number three in the world extended his lead to 7-4 via an eleven and twelve darter. Then he decided the game with a finish of 48.
It is Van Gerwen’s first time this year that he has won a Players Championship. The three-time world champion has also won three rounds in the Premier League.
In the quarterfinals, Van Gerwen took revenge on Van Duijvenbode with a fine average of 104.95 per three arrows. Last week, ‘Mighty Mike’ lost in the quarter-finals of Players Championship 6 to his compatriot, who also won the tournament in Barnsley, England.
After his victory over Van Duijvenbode, Van Gerwen settled with Bradley Brooks: 7-5. Earlier in the tournament he beat Jacques Labre (6-0), Keegan Brown (6-1), Martin Lukeman (6-3) and Boris Krcmar (6-3).
For Raymond van Barneveld, the tournament in Hildesheim was over after just one match. De Hagenaar went down 3-6 against Martin Schindler in the first round.
