The Eredivisie match between FC Groningen and sc Heerenveen came to a standstill for less than fifteen minutes on Sunday after great unrest arose in a supporters section of the northerners. In the fuss, Jetro Willems got a blow from his own fan.
The flame hit the pan after eighty minutes, when a fan from Groningen threatened to enter the field. The trailer was stopped by several stewards.
The unrest then moved to a supporters’ section behind one of the goals. Groningen player Willems tried to calm down the fans, but was unsuccessful.
There was pulling and pushing and the defender even got a blow from his own fan. Other Groningen players also reported to the supporters’ section in question.
When referee Serdar Gözübüyük stopped the match, Heerenveen was leading 0-2 thanks to goals from Sydney van Hooijdonk. The northerners are in great relegation distress.
FC Groningen already had a chaotic day before the incident. Prior to the match, it was announced that current FC Emmen coach Dick Lukkien will act as Groningen coach after the season.
According to director Wouter Gudde, Groningen would report Lukkien’s transfer on Monday at Emmen’s request, but the news leaked out exactly after FC Emmen’s match (2-0 loss against Sparta on Saturday) and before FC Groningen’s game. A deliberate action by FC Emmen, according to Gudde, who called the club “unprofessional and unreliable”.
