Feyenoord took a huge step towards the national title on Sunday thanks to a spectacular 2-3 win over Ajax. Thanks to a late goal from Lutsharel Geertruida, the team from Rotterdam won a Classic in Amsterdam for the first time since 2005.
Due to the win, Feyenoord has no less than six points ahead of Ajax with eight rounds to go. AZ can still get five points from the team from Rotterdam on Sunday evening, but then the Alkmaar club has to win at FC Twente.
Feyenoord got off to a flashy start in the ArenA thanks to a goal in the fifth minute by Santiago Giménez, but Ajax led 2-1 halfway through. Edson Álvarez (seventeenth minute) and Dusan Tadic (37th minute) scored. Thanks to a strong second half, it was Feyenoord that won. In the 52nd minute Sebastian Szymanski made it 2-2 and with that result the visitors would already be the moral winner. A striking header from Geertruida in the 86th minute made it even better for Feyenoord, which won another Classic in the ArenA after eighteen years.
