Carlos Alcaraz can recapture the number 1 position in the world ranking in the night from Sunday to Monday (Dutch time). The Spaniard reached the final of the Masters tournament and dethroned his Serbian rival Novak Djokovic with a victory over Daniil Medvedev.
Nineteen-year-old Alcaraz won in two sets against Jannik Sinner in the last four. The winner of last year’s US Open needed a tiebreak in the first set to shake off the Italian: 7-6 (4). In the second set it went significantly easier: 6-3.
Alcaraz will compete in the final in Indian Wells against Medvedev, who defeated American Frances Tiafoe in the semi-final: 7-5 and 7-6 (4). It is already his nineteenth victory in a row for the Russian. In recent weeks he won the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam and the tournaments in Doha and Dubai.
In Indian Wells, Alcaraz can become number one in the world again after just under two months. The Spaniard lost the top position in the world rankings at the end of January to Djokovic after he won the Australian Open. Alcaraz was missing in Australia due to a muscle injury.
Djokovic is not allowed to play in Indian Wells and next week in Miami because he refuses to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In the United States, foreign travelers must be vaccinated. An exception request from Djokovic was refused by the US authorities.
The women’s final will take place on Sunday between the Kazakh Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. The final battle on the American hard court will start on Sunday at 9 p.m. (Dutch time).
