Students in Durango protested an alleged case of homophobia after a teacher was fired “for being gay”

Students from the “Ignacio Comonfort” General Secondary School in Durango demonstrated to demand the reinstatement of a Spanish teacher who was fired due to his sexual orientation, according to the students themselves. They accused the school director of taking actions arbitrarily and being based on homophobia.

Around three dozen minors, all in uniform from the compound located in the Álvaro Obregón neighborhood, in the municipality of Lerdo, protested shouting “we want justice, we want justice!” along with multiple banners in which letters such as “Homosexuality is not a disease, homophobia is” or “Being gay does not make you a bad teacher” were read.

“They fired the professor unfairly just because of his sexual orientation. The director made it clear that he did not want him because he was gay, so it does not seem fair to us that he left him without a job just because of his orientation and the way the director acted,” said a student, who also assured that he manipulated testimonies from fathers and mothers of families to affect the teacher, as well as skipped the regulatory process to carry out the dismissal.

Another of the students assured that in her school there is no place for discrimination or homophobic expressions: “We only want justice since he was fired for no reason and it is not a reason to, just because he is gay… it is not a reason to kick someone out and take away their title. We don’t want homophobes in this school.”

According to the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (Conapred), in 2022, it accumulated 1,175 complaints related to discrimination due to sexual and gender diversity in the last ten years. Of this number, the majority has to do with acts related to homophobia (708), lesbophobia (240) and transphobia (220), while only four cases of intersexphobia and three of biphobia have been reported.

These “phobias” against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity violate the rights related to dignified treatment, work and a life free from violence, to name a few. While, on the other hand, they promote exclusion and restrict their freedoms.

Currently, hate crimes against the LGBT+ community continue to be part of the Mexican reality, which is why lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and intersex people have demanded that it be recognized as a crime and that it be tried under special parameters, such as femicide. .

However, only 12 of the 32 states that make up the Mexican Republic have criminalized hate crimes against the LGBT+ community: Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Mexico City, Colima, Coahuila, Guerrero, Puebla, Michoacán, Nayarit, Querétaro, San Luis Potosi and Veracruz.

Likewise, to date, 25 federal entities recognize equal marriage, while 20 states have done so in terms of the right to gender identity and nine have sanctioned conversion therapies, also known as “Efforts to Correct Orientation Sexual and Gender Identity” (Ecosig).

According to the Survey on Discrimination for Reasons of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (ENDOSIG), published in 2018, six out of 10 members of the LGBT+ community were discriminated against that year, while 53% claimed to be a victim of harassment or to have received hate speech and acts of physical violence.

According to Conapred, the areas in which the greatest number of discriminatory acts are generated are in the workplace, in public services, culture, recreation and leisure, for which reason it reported that sport is essential to promote inclusion and equality among citizens.
