Sparta Rotterdam again did excellent business in the Eredivisie on Saturday evening. The team of trainer Maurice Steijn won 0-2 at FC Emmen thanks to beautiful goals and seems to be able to get a place in the play-offs for European football.
Koki Saito scored the 1-0 on the Oude Meerdijk just before half-time and did so in an unmistakable way. The Japanese pulled in from the left, sent two defenders into the woods and shot the ball into the far corner.
‘I can do that too’, Vito van Crooij must have thought in the final phase of the match. The attacker passed two players with a cunning foot movement and controlled the 0-2. The FC Emmen of trainer Dick Lukkien could not make a fist for its own audience.
Sparta won for the third time in a row. The Rotterdammers are working on a dream season and can look forward to a sizeable dessert. Steijn’s team climbs – at least for at least 24 hours – to fifth place in the Eredivisie.
The seventh place at the end of the season entitles to play-offs for European football. Depending on the denouement in the cup tournament, even the eighth final ranking could be enough. RKC is currently in that position. The Waalwijkers, having played two games less, are fourteen points behind Sparta.
FC Emmen is entering a tough final phase of the season. The team from Drenthe is fifteenth, five points ahead of SC Cambuur.
