Actress Kelly McCreary is stepping down from her role as cardiologist Maggie Pierce on Grey’s Anatomy after nine seasons. McCreary will not return after the nineteenth run of the series.
The actress does not give a specific reason for her departure. In a comment on Instagram, she thanks the makers of the hospital series for the chance to play the same character for nine years.
“Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the most enjoyable things I’ve had in my life and I leave with immense gratitude for everything. I look forward to the chapter to come and what the future holds for me.”
McCreary isn’t the only familiar face to say goodbye after the nineteenth season. Lead actress Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) experienced her last episode last month. Pompeo did not rule out returning again.
Grey’s Anatomy has been broadcast since 2005. It is the longest running hospital series ever.
