The first transfer took place at the end of February, on that occasion relatives of detainees under the emergency regime in force since the end of March moved to the outskirts of the prisons.
The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, inaugurated the Cecot, the Terrorism Confinement Center, located in Tecoluca, at the end of January and the Minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, told the president that this “would become the largest prison of all America” and that “it would be impossible for a prisoner to leave” the compound, which has 23 hectares of construction.
Criticism from humanitarian associations and support from the population
Despite the allegations of human rights violations within the framework of the emergency regime and the transfer of prisoners, the Salvadoran president has a 91% approval rating from the population, according to a recent survey by the Investigation Unit from the newspaper La Prensa Gráfica.
