Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti put his veterans in the spotlight on Wednesday after reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League. According to the Italian, it is thanks to players such as Karim Benzema, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos that the ‘Royal’ performs so well in the ball of millions.
“The veterans in the selection, with their intelligence and modesty, are responsible for this good atmosphere. Men who do not suffer from a big ego,” Ancelotti said at his press conference after the 1-0 win over Liverpool.
Karim Benzema scored the only goal in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in the 78th minute. With the 2-5 win at Anfield three weeks ago, that tiny win was more than enough for Real to reach the last eight of the Champions League for the third season in a row.
With Modric (37) and Benzema (35), two veterans kicked off who had also won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022. Kroos (33), also a basic player against Liverpool, experienced four of those five final victories.
“Our talents have to be patient because they are in the squad with veterans who already have a fantastic career,” said Ancelotti. “Incidentally, men like Modric and Kroos do not play because of previous achievements in their careers. They are in the starting line-up because they deserve it.”
Real Madrid will be part of the draw on Friday who will be the opponent in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Benfica, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Internazionale, Manchester City and Napoli are also still in the tournament.
