Alfred Schreuder will not return as Club Brugge coach. The former coach of Ajax has withdrawn from the Belgian champion, allowing interim coach Rik De Mil to finish the season.
According to various Belgian media, Schreuder has been working on a return to Club Brugge in recent days, which he made champion last season before leaving for Ajax. A vacancy had arisen at Club after Scott Parker was fired last week.
Schreuder and Club Brugge reportedly did not reach an agreement because the coach wanted a multi-year contract and the club wanted a short-term contract after two trainer dismissals. De Barnevelder then decided to withdraw from the negotiations.
Fifty-year-old Schreuder therefore has to wait longer for a new club, after he was fired from Ajax in January due to the disappointing results. His successor John Heitinga is doing better for the time being. Heitinga won seven Eredivisie matches in a row with Ajax, but was eliminated in the Europa League by Union Berlin.
Club Brugge will now continue longer with De Mil, who had already taken over from Parker. Under his leadership, Standard Liège won 2-0 on Sunday, so that the eighteen-time national champion took a big step towards a place in the championship pool.
In Belgium, the best four teams of the regular season compete in a special group for the national title. The clubs take the points from the regular season to the so-called championship pool, but the number is then halved. There are still five rounds to go in the regular season of the Jupiler Pro League.
