Who should bear the consequences of high inflation? Should we get our energy from sun, wind, nuclear fission or Groningen gas? Is there a limit to the number of migrants that the Netherlands can handle? And inevitably: what should we do with nitrogen?
It is a selection of the questions that are before the NOS in the final debate for the Provincial Council elections. Tomorrow we may choose who will represent us in our province for the next four years, tonight the parties have a last chance to put their views in the spotlight.
Houses and nature
Members of the Provincial Council mainly decide on the division of space: where will houses, windmills, nature, agriculture be located? And the members of parliament in turn elect the members of the Senate, which is important for national political decision-making.
That is why both provincial politicians and national party leaders will debate this evening. Six themes will be discussed: a government for everyone; the wallet; energy; migration; space and confidence in politics.
The themes are each introduced with a short video, which is the starting point for a conversation between Simone Weimans and two provincial leaders. This is followed by a debate led by Rob Trip on the same theme between three national party leaders.
Read more here about how the debate came about and about the choices made, for example about the invitation policy.
The program of party leaders is as follows:
GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver debates with JA21 leader Joost Eerdmans and Wopke Hoekstra (CDA) about the role of government. After that, SP leader Lilian Marijnissen, the brand new ChristenUnie frontwoman Mirjam Bikker and VVD leader Mark Rutte will talk about the wallet. And the third theme comes energy on offer, with PvdA leader Attje Kuiken, FvD leader Thierry Baudet and Sigrid Kaag from D66.
Klaver (GroenLinks) and CDA leader Hoekstra then face each other again, but with PVV leader Geert Wilders there. The three talk about migration. Then Esther Ouwehand (PvdD), BBB leader Caroline van der Plas and Kaag (D66) debate with each other about the division of space. Finally, Kuiken (PvdA), Wilders (PVV) and VVD leader Rutte talk about each other trust in politics.
The debate from the Provincial House in Den Bosch can be followed live on NPO 1 from 8.30 pm – 10.10 pm, via a live stream on NOS.nl and via NPO Politics and News.
